From a designer’s point of view, this project embraces the city of angels’ history but also a lot of worldwide inspirations such as colors and forms from Mexico, Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. More than that, the professional took into consideration the hotel location, combining it with the previously stated inspirations to challenge the limits of boldness with their eclectic choices.

The inspiration came from everywhere, especially from the communities and the history of the city, as such, we can see a lot of earthy tones mostly deep and warm to create a cheerful yet sophisticated environment that passes part of the rich culture and history of the city of the angels on this LA Proper Hotel. This unique property counts with a vast collection of tiles exposed throughout the Proper Hotel comprising 136 unique customized tiles.

The experience starts at the beginning at the entrance of the Proper Hotel. Visitors face the building’s original ornate archway, which is flanked by column-like cactus placed in the rustic pots, where is met with a graphite reception desk designed by the ceramicist Morgan Peck (image shown above). Besides that, can be spotted the original pink and white checkerboard floor tiling kept in the original place, while the ceiling is decored with Abel Macias’ hand-painted multicolored mural, which drew on inspired by the fauna and flora of Mexican folktales.

The Downtown LA hotel’s guest rooms are marked by their eclecticism. Kelly blended contrasting elements such as chunkily patterned headboards with smooth wooden floors with the color of the walls – that varies within the spectrum of charcoal, mauve, dusty blue, ecru and umber so seamlessly that feel comfortable to our eyes.

In the building, we can be founded three different eateries including the lobby-level Caldo Verde restaurant and bar where the aesthetic of the overall Proper Hotel design was kept and blended naturally.

Besides the cocoa and sandstone tiles collection in the place was placed a collection of vintage rugs and seatings, we can also see jungle-like plants against a bespoke stained glass installed by Judson Studios to create the restaurant delimitation and doorway. In this case, can be also spotted elements of Mexican hand-carved chairs, woven pendant lights from the South of France, stone mosaic tables to bring up a brighter and bolder environment to this Downtown LA Proper Hotel.

The place is considered an explosion of the culture and history of the city which was the intention of the team all along and allowed the keep of some original integrity and fabric, like the window casing and brickwork yet elevating it with some contemporary jewel tones, patterns, and plasterwork.

According to the interior designer, Kelly Wearstler, the project aimed to embrace the “spirited exploration of materiality, color, and form to share with guests a hyper-localized flavor of the city and create a hub for local creatives”
